Why This Site Exists
Monongalia County does not keep every property fact in one database. The County Clerk’s recorded instruments and grantor-grantee indexes document conveyances; the Assessor’s parcel system supplies assessment and sale-search fields; and the Sheriff’s Tax Office maintains tax-payment information. The West Virginia Property Viewer adds map layers and parcel attributes, but its mapped lines serve tax reference rather than legal boundary work. We bring the separate search paths, contact details, known coverage limits, and request options together in a county-specific guide.
What You Will Find Here
- Pages by record type: property search, deed records, property tax records, and parcel maps
- The offices behind the records: recorder / register of deeds, assessor / appraisal district, treasurer / tax collector, and the GIS / mapping office
- Search walkthroughs: how to search by address, owner, or parcel; how to trace a chain of title; how to read a tax bill and a parcel map
- Access rules: how West Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act applies to public records requests, where the available fee schedule belongs in a copy estimate, and how to contact the custodian when a record is not online
What We Cannot Do
This is a privately operated reference site, not an office of Monongalia County, West Virginia, or a court. It does not hold county records, administer the assessor’s parcel database, or make decisions for the Clerk or Sheriff. Keep these limits in mind:
- We cannot pull, certify, or change any record on your behalf
- We cannot perform a title search or guarantee clear ownership
- We cannot appraise a property or set its assessed value
- We cannot give legal advice about a deed, a boundary, or a tax dispute
- We cannot promise that every online year, fee, portal feature, or office procedure remains current; confirm details with the custodian before making a filing or payment
Only the office holding a record can verify, certify, or correct it. A title company or attorney can investigate title, and a licensed surveyor can establish a boundary. Information here is not for credit, employment, tenant-screening, insurance, or any other Fair Credit Reporting Act purpose.
